Homemade Christmas Hummus Appetizer
Since the holidays are so decadent and indulgent, I’m always trying to come up with recipes to help balance things out, particularly ones with some extra protein or fiber (like this Christmas fruit wreath and Christmas wreath veggie tray)!
I can’t help it! As a Registered Dietitian, I just know how much better everyone feels when they start with something more nutrient-dense instead of riding the blood sugar rollercoaster all day.
And this hummus wreath is the perfect choice. You get lots of fiber, plus some plant-based protein and healthy fats, and a few fresh veggies to boot. Plus, it’s such a pretty and festive display!
Ingredient Notes

- Hummus: Any type will do! I like to use homemade roasted garlic hummus, but in a pinch, you can use your favorite brand from the store , too.
- Tzatziki sauce: For a creamy, tangy note. If you’re in a rush, grab some from the store or you can make a Greek yogurt tzatziki at home.
- Cucumber: I slice it into quarters lengthwise first and then dice. It’s easier to pick up with pita chips if the pieces aren’t too large.
- Cherry tomatoes: Grape tomatoes or diced roma tomatoes would work too.
- Sliced olives: I prefer to use pre-sliced black or Kalamata.
- Crumbled feta cheese: Can use light or regular.
- Red onion: Dice it finely so that it gets evenly distributed and doesn’t overpower the dip.
For the garnish
- Fresh parsley
- Red bell pepper for the bow
- Drizzle of olive oil (optional): If you choose to add the olive oil, drizzle it on right before serving to prevent it from getting too messy when storing or transporting.
Step-by-Step Instructions

- Place a small bowl upside down (I used a clear glass one) in the center of a large charger plate, circular tray or dinner plate.
- Spread an even layer of hummus around the bowl, leaving an inch or so from the edge of the plate, so that it forms the shape of a wreath.
- Next, spread an even layer of tzatziki on top of the layer of hummus around the edge of the bowl, leaving about an inch of hummus showing around the edges.
- Evenly distribute the diced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, sliced olives, crumbled feta, diced red onion, and chopped parsley over the layers of hummus and tzatziki, so that it looks like a colorful wreath.
- Cut a bow shape from the red bell pepper and arrange at the bottom of the “wreath.”
- Drizzle with a bit of olive oil, if desired. Serve immediately or cover carefully with saran wrap and place in the fridge for later.
- Serve with pita chips, crackers and vegetables. Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- I made this wreath dip on a 10.5 inch dinner plate. If you can, I recommend making the wreath on a larger plate (like a charger or large circular tray) to allow more room around the edges, in case the hummus and tzatziki decide to spread a bit. This is especially the case if it’s been sitting in the fridge for a few hours or overnight since the cucumbers and tomatoes let off some water, which can cause the hummus/tzatziki to spread a bit more.
- I decided to keep the bowl in the center while serving to help the wreath keep its shape. If you do this, I suggest using a small clear bowl. If you don’t keep the bowl in the center, I recommend using a thicker hummus and tzatziki, to prevent it from running into the center when you remove the bowl.

Storage Guidelines
To save some time on the day, prep your hummus wreath the day before, cover it well with plastic wrap, and store in the fridge. Just keep in mind that the fresh veggies may weep a bit and add moisture.
(Another option is to assemble just the hummus and tzatziki ahead of time, then add the feta, olives, and veggies just before serving.)
Serving Suggestions
This pretty little wreath was created specifically to serve at any of your holiday parties! It kind of walks the line between veggie tray and a dip, which can make it really handy for hosting.
