36 Fun and Colorful Cold Lunch Ideas for Kids
Take a look at these healthy lunch box ideas to get inspiration for your own kid’s lunch routine. These are some of my kids’ favorite cold lunch ideas that I’ve packed over the years, and I’m sure you’ll find something your kids will like, too! In fact, you may want to scroll these ideas with them to see what gets them interested. Maybe they’ll want to help you cut fruits into stars and skewer berries. They’re more likely to try it if they helped prepare it!
Of course, feel free to mix and match and modify the ideas according to your little one’s preferences or what you have on hand.
1. Fruity Roll-Up with Veggies and Berries
Peanut butter and jelly is one of the most classic school lunch combos, but you can put a fun twist on that idea. Instead of swapping peanut butter for something like sunflower seed butter (which works too!), these roll-ups use cream cheese. It adds a bit of protein, keeps them completely nut and seed-free, and makes for a tasty, easy-to-eat lunchbox option.

Featured in lunch box:
- A banana, cream cheese, and strawberry chia jam roll up
- Greek yogurt plus a raspberry
- Carrot, celery sticks, and dip
I like to keep a batch of Strawberry Chia Jam on hand (we like to freeze it in a silicone ice cube tray or these Souper Cubes and pop them out as needed). You can also use a store-bought jam if preferred, but I recommend looking for a lower sugar option if possible!
2. Falafel
These homemade falafel bites are full of flavor and herbs! They taste wonderful served with some tangy tzatziki sauce and are so easy to make ahead!

Featured in lunch box:
- Mini falafel pita with lettuce and tzatziki
- Baked sweet potato chips
- Cucumber flowers
- Apple slices
- Mini dark chocolate chips
I like to crumble the falafel up a bit to make it easier to fit into the pitas. If you can find mini whole grain pita breads (I like the Ozery Bakery ones), those are a great option for kids since they fit perfectly into lunch boxes!
3. Homemade Pasta Salad with Fresh Berries & Yogurt
Cold pasta salads are ideal for packing in your kid’s lunch box and infinitely customizable. This version is loaded with protein, veggies, and tons of flavor, and you can easily make a batch on the weekend and serve it all week long.

Homemade chicken nuggets are easier to make than you’d think and if you have a picky eater, you’ll want to give this recipe a go. Extra veggies are baked into the nuggets, so even the pickiest eaters will gladly chow down!

Featured in lunch box:
- Sliced homemade chicken nuggets in a pita with lettuce, tzatziki, and sliced pickles
- Carrots and dip
- Blueberries
5. Homemade Fiestada Pizza and Fresh Melon
Fiestada pizzas are a throwback to my own childhood. It’s like a cross between pizzas and tacos – two of the most kid-friendly meals out there. Plus, it tastes great at room temperature or nicely chilled in a lunch bag!

Featured in lunch box:
- Slice of Fiestada Pizza
- Honey melon stars
- Red peppers
- Tzatziki
6. Greek Pasta Salad Loaded with Veggies
This pasta salad is so tasty and filling, yet relies on pretty simple ingredients. The lentils in this recipe add fiber and protein to fill those tummies until they get home and make a great vegetarian option if your kids don’t love meat!

Featured in lunch box:
- Greek lentil pasta salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, lentils, and Mediterranean dressing
- Cheddar cheese sticks
- Fresh strawberries
- 3-ingredient cookies {no egg}
7. Hard-Boiled Eggs and Protein Muffins
Hard-boiled eggs are a great pack-and-go option for anyone, but eating them whole can be tricky for kids. Go the extra mile to slice it into wedges (we call them egg boats). They’ll be much easier to hold and eat! Some fresh berries and a homemade protein muffin end this meal on a sweet note!

- Blueberry Protein Muffin
- Carrot sticks and dip

8. Homemade Lunchable with Meat and Cheese
If your little one is a grazer who would rather eat cheese and crackers than a sandwich, this is such a simple meal prep idea! The meat and cheese skewers are a lot easier (and more fun) to eat than a regular string cheese or piece of salami. The crackers and cucumbers are just begging to be dipped into the filling hummus!

Featured in lunch box:
- Sliced cheese and mini pepperoni skewers
- Hummus (homemade or store-bought)
- Whole-grain crackers
- Cucumber Slices
- Mini granola bites
- Fresh blueberries
9. Homemade Pizza Rolls with Carrot Sticks
Believe it or not, but these cute homemade pizza rolls have spinach and red peppers hidden under the cheese layer so your kids will get an extra dose of veggies at the same time.

- Grapes (cut into quarters lengthways if your kids are under the age of 5 or don’t know how to take small bites)

- Mini star crackers (or try this sweet potato cracker recipe!)
- Mixed fruit
- Nut-free granola bites
- Greek yogurt
11. Chicken Salad Sandwich
Turn leftover rotisserie chicken into chicken salad for delicious sandwiches your little ones will devour! My kids love this cranberry walnut chicken salad (skip the nuts if nut-free) for a sweet pop of flavor and crunch. I like to use whole wheat bread or sandwich thins for extra fiber.

12. High Protein Waffles
For a kid who loves sweeter meals, try sending high-protein waffles. They look decadent, but this entire meal is carefully balanced to have the right amount of protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and fats to nourish your child for a day of learning and play.

Featured in lunch box:
- 3-ingredient protein waffles (you won’t believe these are made with cottage cheese!) topped with cream cheese and strawberry chia jam. You can add strawberry or banana slices too!
- Fresh raspberries and blueberries
- Greek yogurt
13. Pita Bread Wedges with Chicken Breast
Anytime I can use the pizza formula for a meal, my kids are in. These wedges use pita bread topped with tzatziki then grilled chicken, veggies, and cheese. Since the veggies are cut so small, and the other ingredients are so flavorful, kids will gladly devour them!

Featured in lunch box:
- Greek pita wedges spread with tzatziki and topped with diced grilled chicken, cucumber, peppers, and crumbled feta
- Cucumber slices
- Hummus
- Fresh blueberries and raspberries
Be sure to spread enough tzatziki on the pita to help the toppings adhere to it like glue. I like to use thicker pita bread so that it’s strong enough for kids to pick up each pita wedge without losing all of the toppings.
14. Bagel with Cream Cheese
Yep, an ordinary bagel topped with cream cheese counts as a main dish! You get the fiber, a bit of protein, and some fats, which will keep them going, especially with some melon and carrot sticks on the side. P. S. Those cute little eyes make even the most ordinary food more interesting. Just be sure to remind them that any eyes or plastic pieces are not to be eaten (or put in their mouths).

We use bento boxes all the time since the little containers are just the right size for an interesting lunch. The borders also helps a lot with kids who don’t like their foods to mix, and it’s fun to mix and match different items together! Lunch Box Tips
- Play with popular themes. Kids love snackable meals, like Lunchables. Prioritize small, bite-sized entrees and snacks, like fresh berries or mini muffins. Use skewers to hold the pieces together, too!
- Choose a bento-style lunch box with individual compartments for easy serving (we like using the yum box or planet box).
- Fruits + veggies first. I highly recommend adding plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Not only do they offer much needed fiber, but they’re also hydrating and loaded with vitamins and minerals. Feel free to use whichever produce your kids like and sprinkle in a few newer options here and there to expand their horizons.
- Strike a balance between homemade and storebought. You don’t have to make everything from scratch, especially if you can find high-quality options with lower sodium and sugar. This makes it easy to meal prep in less time, too.
- Serve dips & sauces. Kids will easily eat more fresh vegetables with a good, flavorful dip. Make one batch of dip and prep your veggies on the weekend to make packing lunches even easier.
- Use squeeze bottles to store dips or sauces for easy serving.
- Store your meal ingredients in individual containers in the fridge, and then add them to the lunchbox each morning or the night before..
What’s the best way to keep a lunch cold for hours?
After putting in all that work to make the food and pack the lunch box, the last thing you want is your little one eating warm tuna salad! There are some really easy ways to keep your kid’s lunch box cold, like adding a frozen water bottle or one of the best ice packs for lunch boxes.
Especially if you use bento boxes like I do, it’s best to use a slim ice pack like these Bentgo Buddies unicorn ice packs or Monkey Business polar bear packs. They can slip above or below the box in your little one’s lunch bag to keep them nice and cool. Read more about the best ice pack for lunch boxes here!
How to Keep Your Kid’s Lunch Cold
- To keep your little one’s lunch cold all day, add a frozen water bottle or freezable ice pack. Although they will thaw over time, they tend to keep things cool enough.
- Since not all recipes stay fresh for a full five days, try splitting your meal prep into two days: Sundays and Wednesdays. You’ll be able to make enough for 2-3 days at a time, so the food is always fresh.
- If you did any batch cooking and have snacks in the freezer, be sure to thaw however many you need in the fridge overnight.
