High Protein Chocolate Mousse Recipe
Traditional chocolate mousse is known for being indulgent and decadent with a thick, creamy texture and massive wallop of chocolate flavor. This chocolate protein mousse has a very similar texture and flavor that you won’t believe is higher in protein and overall better-for-you!
The secret is to melt the chocolate chips first, which help thicken the filling and add a rich chocolate flavor that cocoa powder can’t quite achieve on its own. If all snacks tasted like this, it’d be way easier to hit your protein goal every day!
Elysia’s Recipe Recap

Texture: Rich, creamy texture you won’t believe comes from cottage cheese
Taste: Bold chocolate flavor with a subtle floral note from the honey
Ease: Very simple to make – just melt the chocolate, then blend everything together
Recommended: The intensity of the chocolate and rich creaminess satisfy any chocolate cravings.
Would I make these again? Absolutely! I like trying out different toppings and flavor combinations too.

Ingredient Notes

- Dark chocolate chips: I used Lily’s, which are sweetened with stevia. Sugar-free chips can be a great way to get that chocolate fix without the extra added sugar. You can sub in regular dark chocolate chips if that’s what you have.
- Plain cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein, and you often get more protein with low-fat cottage cheese. Check the container to find one that works for your macros.
- Honey: Or your sweetener of choice. Maple syrup is a good option, too.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: This will hydrate in the mixture and add extra depth of flavor.
- Vanilla extract
- Milk: As needed.
Step-by-Step Instructions

- Pour the chocolate chips into a microwave-safe dish and microwave in 20-30 second increments, stirring in between each interval, until they are fully melted.
- Next, to a food processor or high-speed blender, add the cottage cheese, melted chocolate, honey, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Blend on high for 20-30 seconds. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the food processor or blender and then blend again until smooth. If the mixture is too thick to blend, add a tablespoon of milk and blend again until smooth. If it’s still grainy, continue blending until creamy.
- Divide the mixture into smaller individual bowls or glasses. Place in the fridge for at least an hour to allow it to firm up slightly. The longer it sits in the fridge, the thicker and more mousse-like it will become.
- Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream and/or chocolate shavings and your favorite fresh fruit, if desired. Enjoy!

Expert Tips
- If you find that the mixture is too thick to blend, add 1 tablespoon of milk at a time and frequently scrape down the sides of the blender with a spatula until the mixture blends into a smooth and creamy consistency. Avoid adding too much milk, as we still want the mixture to be on the thicker side so that it firms up into a mousse.

Recipe FAQs
If you aren’t a fan of cottage cheese and haven’t tried this recipe as-is, I recommend trying it first. The blending process breaks down the tiny curds, making whipped cottage cheese even richer and creamier than Greek yogurt. If you try it and still can’t tolerate the texture or flavor, you can try using Greek yogurt instead, but it may have a tangier taste and slightly different consistency.
Technically, no, but it can be. Traditional chocolate chips have extra added sugar, but I used Lily’s chips for this recipe, which are sweetened with stevia. If you use sugar-free chocolate chips and replace the honey with a keto-friendly sweetener, it will be suitable for a low carb diet. Consider using full fat cottage cheese to reduce the carbs even further.
Yes! This mousse can be frozen for an indulgent dessert. It helps to refrigerate first to help it set up, then freeze.
Storage Guidelines
This chocolate cottage cheese mousse should be stored in the fridge to help the mixture set, which makes it easy to prep ahead of time, too. Just fill your jars or airtight container, then pop them in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. Eat straight from the fridge.

Serving Suggestions
I typically think of this high-protein chocolate mousse as a dessert, sweet treat or pre or post-workout snack.
To make it even more satiating, you can add some healthy fats and additional fiber, like a drizzle of peanut butter, fresh berries, cacao nibs, a sprinkle of chocolate granola, and more.
Recipe Variations
- Increase the protein: Consider swapping the cocoa powder with chocolate protein powder for extra protein. This will likely add sweetness, so you may want to skip the honey.
- Add cream cheese: For a subtle cheesecake-like flavor, add a dollop of plain cream cheese to the mixture while blending. So good!
- Add a chocolate ripple: If you want even more chocolaty goodness, melt some extra chocolate chips with a little bit of coconut oil. When filling your container with the mousse, add about 1/3 first, then drizzle with the melted chocolate. Add more cottage cheese mousse, more chocolate, and repeat until done. After setting, the chocolate will harden into a crispy shell that will add crunch and even more chocolate flavor.
