Why We Love this Strawberry and Banana Smoothie
- No Yogurt: I’m a big fan of yogurt, but not everyone enjoys the tanginess of yogurt in their smoothies or keeps it in their fridge on a regular basis. Our recipe still produces a thick and refreshing smoothie without any yogurt required.
- Family-Friendly: If your family isn’t big on eating fresh fruit, serving smoothies is an easy way to get extra nutrients into sometimes picky eaters. Both kids and adults are sure to love this simple smoothie, and it’s easily adaptable too!
- Easy Recipe: Nothing is easier than adding a few simple ingredients to a blender and mixing it up for a healthy and delicious drink and snack all in one!
Ingredient Notes
- Frozen strawberries: If you have a high-powered blender, frozen strawberries work well. If you don’t have an overly good blender, try using fresh strawberries, sliced into quarters and frozen before using.
- Banana: Use an overripe, brown spotty fresh banana for a creamier texture, and maximum sweetness and flavour.
- Milk: Use dairy milk or your favourite milk alternative for a creamy smoothie.
- Vanilla Extract: Adds an extra boost of flavour.

Best Strawberry Banana Smoothie Tips
- Use an overripe banana with brown spots for best results. Since this smoothie is naturally sweetened with fruit and uses no added sugar, you’ll want to maximize the sweetness by using a sweet overripe banana.
- If you don’t have a very high-power blender: I recommend purchasing fresh strawberries and slicing them into quarters before freezing to make them easier to break down.
- To help prevent burning out your blender: I typically like to start by placing 1 cup of the frozen strawberries into the blender along with the banana, milk and vanilla. Blend until broken down and then add the remaining frozen strawberries to the mixture and blend until smooth.
- If your strawberries aren’t very sweet: You may wish to add a bit of honey or maple syrup to taste. If you want to avoid added sugar and prefer to stick to a natural sweetener, you can also add in 1-2 pitted dates and pulse until smooth and creamy. It’s a great way to add some extra natural sweetness to the smoothie and you can’t even taste the dates!
Recipe FAQs
Nope! A smoothie doesn’t necessarily need yogurt. Although yogurt can add additional creaminess to a smoothie, it can still be smooth, thick and creamy without it. The addition of bananas, frozen fruit and your favourite milk will still produce that nice creamy and thick consistency.
Definitely not! In fact, I prefer to make smoothies without it since sometimes ice cubes can dilute the flavour. Frozen fruit is enough to provide that extra thickness, and cold and refreshing taste.
You can make this strawberry banana smoothie ahead of time, although it tastes best fresh as it may lose some of its frostiness and start to separate after being stored in the fridge.
If you do make it ahead of time, give it a quick stir before serving, or for a sweet treat, freeze any leftover smoothie in a freezer-safe container for “ice cream” or in popsicle mold to make popsicles instead.
Storage Guidelines
Store this strawberry banana smoothie without yogurt covered or in a tightly sealed jar or airtight container, leaving as little air as possible. The smoothie will keep for up to 24 hours in the fridge.
