Benefits of Making Your Own Taco Seasoning
In our house, we use this seasoning mix at least one to two times per week and not just for taco night!
Here are some reasons why we are loving this healthy taco seasoning:
- I’ve never been a fan of the store-bought taco seasoning packets because they’re always loaded with additives and way too much salt. Totally unnecessary. However, if you make it your own spice blend, you can control exactly what’s going into the mix!
- This taco seasoning blend recipe makes up a batch of low carb, sugar free taco seasoning and is appropriate if you are following a paleo, whole 30, or keto diet.
- It’s incredibly versatile. You can use it for so many different meals and recipes!
- Your own homemade seasoning will taste just as good if not better than store-bought packets of taco seasoning!
- It’s super easy to make. In fact, it takes less than 5 minutes to prepare for quick and effortless meals throughout the week.

How to Make Your Own Mild Taco Seasoning
I get it. Not everyone loves super hot and spicy taco seasoning, especially if you have kids. So we’ve designed this easy DIY taco seasoning to be as mild or spicy as you’d like it to be!
To prepare this healthy mild taco seasoning recipe, mix all of the spices together in a small bowl, mason jar or airtight container.
Then, adjust the spice level to your preference:
For a mild seasoning blend, use 1/8 tsp or less of the red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
If you’d like your homemade taco seasoning mix to be spicy, I’d use closer to 1/4 tsp or more of the cayenne pepper.
Totally adaptable and flexible for a range of taste buds!
Tips for homemade taco seasoning
- Make a large batch. I generally like to make up a big batch of this taco seasoning and store it in a mason jar. I recommend doubling or tripling the recipe so that you have it on hand for weeks (or months)!
- This recipe makes about half a cup of seasoning. It should last you a little while, but it never hurts to have some extra!
- Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. We generally make and store our taco seasoning in a mason jar or small air-tight container. Keep the spice mixture at room temperature out of direct sunlight in a dark place like your spice cupboard.
Uses for Taco Seasoning
Now that you have your own DIY taco seasoning on hand, skip the pre-packaged taco seasoning and use this blend in your favorite Mexican recipes and Mexican-inspired dishes.
- Sprinkle on ground chicken, ground beef, or ground turkey for tacos or taco salad (try this Mason Jar Taco Salad)
- Use for Crock Pot Taco Meat
- Use it in chili
- Dump some in a soup
- As a seasoning on grilled chicken
- Use it to make these Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas (a family favorite!)
- To season sweet potato fries
- As a seasoning on roasted vegetables
- Stir it into sour cream and mayo for a delicious taco dip
You can sprinkle this stuff on EVERYTHING….it’s really versatile!
Pro Tip: I usually use about 3-4 tablespoons of seasoning for a pound of ground meat.
Believe me, once you have some of this stuff on hand, it makes the process of whipping up tasty, healthy meals SO much easier, especially on those busy weeknights.
Use as little or as much as you’d like to add bold flavor to your next meal!
Recipe Variations
- Add a smoky flavor: Swap out the paprika with sweet smoked paprika for a sweeter, smoky flavor enhancer you won’t be able to stop using!
- Adjust the chili powder: You can use a mild chili powder or crank up the heat with something spicier. It’s up to you!
- Tweak the spices. Love garlic powder? Add more. Prefer a peppery flavor? Add black pepper. Feel free to adjust this recipe or add any additional spices to make it exactly your own.
