These DIY mason storage jars are an attractive way to organize items like Q-tips, cotton balls, and bath salts. Plus they’re simple and affordable to make! Perfect for the bathroom or bedroom!
So a couple of weeks ago, I went to Home Depot five times in one week.
I’m not even joking.
When I was a kid, my dad used to drag us into Home Depot because he was always looking for supplies for all of his home renovation projects. After that experience, I never thought I would actually go into Home Depot deliberately.
Or five times in one week.
Times have changed.
But in my defense, I did have a good reason to go THAT many times.
I was working on a whole bunch of DIY projects and fell in love with these crystal knobs.
Yeah.
I went to Home Depot for knobs, but you can also find them here.
The problem is, every time I thought I had enough knobs, I realized that I needed more knobs for another project.
First I got some for a cabinet makeover.
Then I wanted some knobs for my bed because I didn’t like the ugly black IKEA knobs. They were just a little cheap looking.
And then I thought maybe I should pick up some extras “just in case.”
And THEN, while I was in the process of doing a bathroom makeover, I decided that I wanted to make some DIY storage jars.
I had been eyeing those apothecary jars but I couldn’t justify forking out $40 plus for a glass jar. Especially since I wanted three of them!
So I got inspired on Pinterest to create my own little storage jars.
Pinterest to the rescue…again.
I ran out and got three small roundish mason jars and spray painted the outside of the lids with white spray paint.
Now this is something that I didn’t do, but I would definitely do it next time. I strongly recommend that you glue the round part of the jar lid to the inside of the rim before spray painting. And DON’T spray paint the side of the lid that screws onto the jar, or it will be difficult to open and close it.
Next, once the paint was dry, I glued the crystal knobs onto the centre of the lids with a craft adhesive that adheres to metal. And then let it dry!
Next, I filled the jars with Q-tips, cotton balls and some lavender epsom salt .
They look so pretty all lined up in the bathroom! And I didn’t have to break the bank to create them.
BONUS!

That’s so funny!! When my husband was alive he drug me to Home Depot after he picked me up from work. I protested he could go all day long while I was at work. There wasn’t anything there I was interested in. Since he passed away I too am at Home Depot sometimes several times a week but I can do more projects since I am retired. I wish he was still here to go to Home Depot!! And those jars are really cute!
I totally hear you about Home Depot! Once you find a project to work on, it can be a great place to hang out! Thanks for stopping by to comment :)
You can buy white, plastic lids for these jars that will not chip. Check the canning section at Target or other grocery stores
That’s a great tip Joyce! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hello,I’m so excited to do this withmy daughtwr, where did u purchasemason jars at thanks
Thanks for stopping by Monique — so glad you love the mason jars! I’m from Canada so I purchased the jars at Canadian Tire, but I’m sure you could find similar jars at any type of home improvement store. Have fun working on the jars!
Beautiful project! Love it! I would love to make it. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Mayra!
I absolutely love your DIY Mason Jar Storage Jars. Could you please explain the comment about next time glueing the round part of the jar lid to the inside of the rim before you paint them ? I’m just not exactly sure what you meant. Thank you so much and keep up the great posts !
Thanks Robin! What I meant is that there were two separate parts to the lid on the mason jars that I purchased. One was the round circle that covers the hole of the mason jar and the other was the outer rim that secures the circular piece to the jar. I just meant that I would stick the two together before painting just to make the painting process a little easier rather than painting the two parts separately. You can certainly do it however you prefer. Hope that makes sense!
I ordered my crystal knob on the “Wish” app for $2 & I used an empty candle jar from Bath & Body. I was also inspired by Pinterest.
That’s awesome Pat! Such a great idea to use an empty candle jar!
I love your ideas I want to be a member
Thanks Kelly! You can subscribe to the website in the box on the right hand side for more ideas!
I use the wide plastic lids instead of the standard metal rings & lids
Perfect! That definitely works too!
I think that was a GREAT IDEA!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Jeanie!
I changed out the screws for shorter ones and they did not show.
That’s great that it worked for you Mary! Thanks for the update :)
What size jars are these? It is super cute!!
Thanks Rachael! I used the 16 oz Ball Platinum Wide Mouth Pint Jars. Hope this helps!
Love these! I made a few at Christmas time and put candy in them. I’m just curious what size mason jars did you use?

Do you have the link to those knobs? Couldn’t find them on Home Depot website.
Hi Katie, this is the link for the knobs: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Liberty-1-1-4-in-Chrome-with-Clear-Faceted-Acrylic-Cabinet-Knob-P30122-CHC-C/202023334;jsessionid=C913BCA5ED8FB97B22F4C68D01E0C52A
Hope this helps!
I love these! But how did you get the spray paint on the lids not to chip off? I did a project for mason jars in the kitchen and spray painted the lids and it kept chipping off into the jar. I even put a clear protective coating on it.
Thanks Kayla! So far, I haven’t had any trouble with the paint chipping. That being said, I use them more as decorative jars and don’t fuss with the lids too much. If you’re going to use the jars on a regular basis, then painting the lids might not work as well. Hope that helps!
Nice, I love repurposed jars. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for stopping by Rhonda!
Good project, Elysia!
Thanks Dinda!
I love them! I just have one question. Why didn’t you screw the knobs on instead of gluing them?
Thanks Candice! It was just a personal preference. I didn’t want to see the screw sticking through the lid for decorative purposes. You could definitely screw the knobs into the lid too!
Where did you find knobs without screws on them?
Hi Summer, I found them at Home Depot!
They can be found at Lowes too! I found mine at Lowes! Thank you!
That’s great — thanks for the update!
These are so cute! I am sharing this on Pinterest.
Thanks so much Roberta!
I love these I’m definitely going to make some
Thanks Linda! These jars are a really great way to store things like Q-tips, cotton balls and bath salts! Hope you enjoy! :)
