These DIY Mason Snack Jars make the perfect gift for family and friends and can also be used as home decor in your own kitchen! They’re super easy to make and can be customized with whatever snacks you desire!
Last week, I posted a couple of snack ideas including my Chocolate Coconut Granola and Roasted Sriracha Chickpeas and promised a follow-up post on how you could package up these snacks for a cute Father’s Day gift, or really, for anyone who enjoys a tasty snack here and there.
And who doesn’t love a good snack?!
It would also be perfect for a teacher’s gift, party favour (think bridal shower or wedding!) or gift for friends or co-workers. You could even keep them for yourself since they look super cute lined up on the kitchen counter.
Shhh.. I won’t tell anyone!
I’m not gonna lie, I always find choosing gifts to be a difficult process, especially if the gift recipient gives you absolutely NO hints about what they want or need.
I find that men are the worst for this!
The only thing my husband ever claims to need are socks and underwear. Socks and underwear are great, but definitely not what I want to get him for his first Father’s Day.
And yeah, the first Father’s Day is tough, but then when you have to continue to think about gift ideas for years and years after THAT, it’s basically impossible to come up with new and creative ideas without eventually resorting to the good ol’ Home Depot gift card.
The struggle is REAL.
Sometimes homemade gifts are the best way to go. They’re not only unique, but also thoughtful because they’re made from the heart!
That’s why I love these DIY mason snack jars.
You can use any size mason jar, big or small and customize them with whatever knobs you like, from colourful to neutral! The options are endless.
You can also customize them with whatever snacks you desire. I’ve provided the recipes for some of my favourite sweet and savoury healthy homemade snack ideas below, but feel free to sub in your favourites.
What’s great about these snack options is that they’re shelf-stable so they should be good for at least a few weeks in the jars (if they last that long!!)
They’re also a perfect healthier option to nibble on when that snack attack hits. And I’m sure we’ve all experienced that feeling of not knowing what to eat even though the kitchen is fully stocked!
This gift is pretty much a no-brainer for snack lovers. With these jars, the snacks are sitting there RIGHT in front of you neatly labeled for anyone to grab.
What I especially love is that the kids can also help make the snacks that go in these jars, so it’s a perfect way to get the whole family involved in making Dad’s gift!
I’m a strong believer in getting the kids in the kitchen at a young age as it can help foster a healthier relationship with food AND also help to develop those cooking skills!
So let’s chat about how we make these jars. They’re really quite simple.
All you need are some mason jars with lids and decorative knobs, preferably ones with a screw. Next, you just have to drill a hole in the centre of the lid and stick the knob through the hole.
Pretty easy so far right? Believe me, I’m not very handy so if I can do it, anyone can!
Then, you just screw up the bolt that comes with the knob on the underside of the lid so that the knob is secured to the lid.
As an alternative, if the knob doesn’t come with a screw attached like with my DIY Mason Storage Jars, you could simply use a craft adhesive to stick the knob to the jar.
Next, just write the name of the snacks that you’ll be putting in the jars on a reusable chalkboard label. I used a Sharpie metallic silver permanent marker, but you could also use a chalk marker or chalk if you don’t want the words to stay on the label permanently.
Stick the label to the jar and fill the jars up with the corresponding snacks. I used Roasted Sriracha Chickpeas, Easy Granola Recipe {4 Different Ways} and roasted Spicy Nuts.
The next part is my favourite because it upgrades the jars to “gift status.”
Simply print out the labels and cut them out around the thin grey line.
Next, attach the tag to knob using a cute ribbon. You can find cute and affordable ribbons at the dollar store or you can check out this one, which is similar to what I used!
And just like that you have your own customized snack jars!
For your convenience, I’ve attached the full list of supplies required and instructions below!
Table of Contents
Required Supplies for Snack Jars:
- A Drill
- Mason Jars with Lids
- Decorative Knobs with Screw
- Reusable Chalkboard Labels
- Chalk or Chalk Board Markers (a Sharpie Metallic Silver Permanent Marker also works)
- Gift Tag (download below)
- Hole Puncher
- Cute ribbon (I used a white organza ribbon)
- Snacks to fill the jars (try out the recipes below!)
Instructions:
1.Using a drill, create a hole in the centre of each of the mason jar lids. Stick the screw of the decorative knob through the hole and screw the bolt until it is tightened to the underside of the lid (the bolt generally comes with the knob). At this point, the knob should be secured to the lid.
2. Next, write the names of your snacks of choice on chalkboard labels using chalk or a chalk board marker if you’d like it to remain on there permanently. A silver permanent Sharpie marker also works well.
3. Stick the chalkboard label to the side of the jar.
4. Fill each jar with the snack that matches the label and tightly screw on the lid.
5. Print out gift tags and cut out around the grey line. Using a hole puncher, punch a hole in the top of each tag.
6. Cut the ribbon to desired length and thread through the hole on the tag. Tie ribbon around the knob on the lid of the jar into a neat bow. Repeat for each jar.
There you have it! A cute and edible gift that you can give to friends, family, teachers or co-workers!
Now to decide…which snacks are you going to fill your jars with?
