Why You’ll Love this Mango Pineapple Salsa
- Healthy: There are so many nutrients packed in this salsa, like fibre, vitamin A, C and potassium.
- Quick: It only takes about 15 minutes to make a bowl of this tangy salsa and you only need a few fresh ingredients easily found at grocery stores.
- Make ahead: If you are planning to serve this mango and pineapple salsa as part of a larger meal or as an app, you can make it several hours ahead of time. The flavours just keep getting better and better!
Ingredient Notes
- Ripe pineapple: Juicy pineapple perfectly complements mango as it adds a nice bright flavor to balance mango’s mellow sweetness. Use whole pineapple, rather than canned pineapple, for the best flavor and texture in this fresh fruit salsa.
- Mango: Sweet mangos add a meatiness and subtle tartness that pairs perfectly with sour pineapple in this sweet salsa. You can use any type of ripe mango for this easy mango salsa recipe.
- Red Onion: Red onion is milder than white or yellow and can easily be enjoyed raw. Chop it finely to prevent it from overpowering the salsa.
- Red Bell Pepper: I love the colour the red pepper adds to the dish as well as its crunchy texture.
- Cilantro: Cilantro is a must in this tropical salsa. It’s a great way to add freshness and Mexican flavor. If you don’t like cilantro, you can use parsley instead.
- Lime juice: Use fresh lime juice rather than bottled for the brightest and zingiest flavor.
- Honey: For some extra natural sweetness. If you are vegan, you can use maple syrup instead or leave it out altogether.

Tips for the Best Fruit Salsa
- Dice up the mango and pineapple in approximately 1/2 inch chunks so that’s it’s roughly uniform in size. It makes for a nicer presentation and is easier to serve.
- Chop up the red onion really finely to prevent the flavours from overpowering the salsa. We want finely minced onion; not large chunks.
- If the salsa has been sitting for a while, it might start to release some of its juices in the bottom of the bowl. You may wish to serve with a slotted spoon if you don’t want the additional juice on whatever it is that you’re serving it with. That being said, the juice can also be a great way to flavour up a side dish such as rice. It can go both ways!
- For extra heat, add a diced jalapeno pepper. Be sure to start with just a little bit and taste before adding more.
- To speed up this recipe, you can use pre-cut fruit, although you may need to cut some into smaller pieces.
- If you’re in a rush, you can carefully pulse the ingredients together in your food processor. Just be sure not to blend it too fine; the best pineapple mango salsa has some pieces of fruit to pick up with your favorite tortilla chips.
Storage Guidelines
Leftover salsa can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 2-3 days. It will start to soften and lose liquid over time, so it’s best to eat it quickly. Since this delicious salsa is served raw, I recommend keeping it cool before serving.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, this pineapple mango salsa recipe is a great make ahead recipe! I like to serve it within 6 hours of making it so it is super fresh, but it will keep well, covered in the fridge, for up to 4 days.
It’s great for meal prep and makes an excellent addition to your lunchtime salads throughout the week!
I much prefer to use fresh produce for this recipe. Frozen fruit can retain a lot of water, and canned fruit is often packed in a sugary syrup.
If you choose to use frozen mango or pineapple, make sure that you allow it to thaw and drain some of the additional liquid first to prevent the salsa from being too “soupy.”
I would avoid canned fruit if possible, but if that’s all you have, be sure to look for the fruit packed in water and drain it really well to get rid of as much of the liquid as you can.
This salsa is not spicy at all. If you prefer yours to have a bit of heat, you can add in a few finely diced red chilis or jalapeño peppers for that extra kick.
