Bum rash, cradle cap, sun burn, spit up & stubborn stains? Today, we’re chatting about some top product picks for common baby issues! You NEED these products in your LIFE!
I’ll admit, before I became a mother, I had NO IDEA what I was in for. Before and during my pregnancy, I envisioned sitting there with my cute and tiny baby all day long enjoying all of the baby snuggles and giggles.
I had heard about issues and struggles from other moms, but it was all SO HARD to imagine, until my baby made his appearance — it was at that moment that I got a serious reality check. It didn’t take long for the issues to start cropping up one by one, or sometimes all at the same time!
Naturally, I tend to be a problem solver rather than letting things resolve themselves, so as soon as those issues popped up, I jumped to find a solution. Throughout my research and trial and error, I came across a number of products that I highly recommend and still use to this day!
Today, I’ve compiled a list of top product picks for some of these common baby issues. Hopefully they’ll help you out as well if you’ve encountered similar situations with your baby:
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment {Bum Rash}
When my baby was only a few weeks old, he developed a really bad bum rash. The poor little guy was having a bowel movement after every feeding, which back then was pretty much every 1-2 hours. Poor little guy. Even though we kept on top of changing his diaper frequently, the moisture and acidity from his stools took a toll on his sensitive little bum and he developed a rash that got so bad that it actually started to develop some open sores and bleed. I felt like a horrible mom and it made me sad to think my baby was experiencing any discomfort!
I had tried a number of rash ointments and creams, but none of them seemed to do the trick. Day after day, his rash just seemed to get worse. After doing some research, I discovered Boudreaux’s Butt Paste
and I’ve gotta say, this stuff worked like a charm!
Within a few days of using this paste, his bum rash completely cleared up! I ordered the maximum strength paste which contains 40% zinc oxide. I highly recommend this paste for those stubborn bum rashes, as it has WORKED WONDERS.
Since we started using it, he hasn’t developed any serious rashes and he’s now 6 months old. We still use it frequently as a protective mechanism to prevent future rashes and it lasts a long time because it’s so thick and only a thin layer is required. I only just ordered my second tube a couple of weeks ago, so it got us through at least the first 5 months.
AND It’s even fun to say. Say it!
BOUDREAUX’S *BUTT* PASTE.
My little one giggles every time we talk about applying his butt paste!
WaterWipes Sensitive Baby Wipes {Sensitive Skin}
Another strategy that we used when my little guy developed his bum rash was to switch over from using regular wipes to water wipes. Or alternatively, you can use a small baby washcloth run under warm water to wipe your baby’s bum.
Prior to this, we had been using regular wipes from Pampers and Huggies and it just seemed that it further aggravated our baby’s sensitive skin. We automatically noticed a difference when we switched over to just using water to clean his bum. Although, you can simply use a wash cloth at home, it does require more laundry and it’s not always easy to wipe your baby’s bum if you don’t have access to water when you’re out and about.
That’s why I LOVE these water wipes. They’re great for sensitive skin and are portable as well!
Mustela Foam Shampoo {Cradle Cap}
Shortly after we dealt with the bum rash *sigh of relief,* my baby developed a case of cradle cap.
GREAT.
He started to develop scaly skin on his scalp and there were dry flakes of skin all over his head that made its way down to his eye brows. He even lost all of the hair on top of his head so he looked like a little balding old man.
I’ll admit, I freaked out a bit. Our baby was born with a bunch of hair and he was already balding?!?
I had read about cradle cap and instantly knew that was the issue. I was also aware that by not dealing with it right away, it could get a lot worse, so mama came to the rescue again! I started conducting some research on some strategies to get rid of the flakes (and help him get his hair back!!), and instantly started implementing these strategies.
First, I applied a layer of coconut oil to his head or wherever there were rough patches of scaly skin and let it sit there for a few minutes to soften up the skin. Next, I used a soft brush and gently brushed his head to exfoliate off any rough and scaly skin.
Then, I took him over to the sink and washed his head using Mustela Foam Shampoo, which is a shampoo specifically designed to combat cradle cap. After we washed his head, I took the soft brush once again to his head get rid of any additional flakes that might have come off during the washing process. Finally, we applied a thin layer of Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment aquaphor over his head to seal in the moisture.
We repeated this process for several days and in less than a week, the cradle cap had been resolved. His hair rapidly grew back to the point where everyone now comments on how much hair he has! So I’m assuming, this strategy worked!
Ivory Snow Ultra Concentrated Liquid Detergent {Pooping Through}
One thing I failed to realize before having our baby is how much babies poop! ]
Seriously.
This guy was a pooping machine!
I was slightly horrified when his cute little ivory and pastel outfits quickly got destroyed by his massive blowouts. Of course, this mama was not gonna let a little poop get in the way, so I started asking other moms what they used to combat the nasty poop stains. Low and behold, it seemed like EVERY mom recommended Ivory Snow laundry detergent.
First of all, it smells AMAZING! Want your baby to have that fresh and cute baby scent?
Get some of this stuff.
I just wanted to sit there and sniff my baby all day long after I had washed his little outfits in this detergent. Not to mention, it did a great job of combatting the stains.
For best results, I recommend throwing the stained outfit in the wash along with some of this detergent while the stain is still fresh. That should do the trick. For extra stubborn stains, refer to the next tip.
OxiClean Baby Stain Fighter {Stubborn Stains}
There were some instances where just the detergent didn’t do the trick and his outfits (or blankets, or my clothes) required a little extra TLC. In this case, we used some OxiClean Baby Stain Fighter.
I just added some of this to the wash along with the Ivory Snow and since using this, my baby’s outfits have been coming out a lot more bright and clean. Highly recommend this if those stubborn stains won’t budge!
Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen {Sunburn}
Our baby was born in December, so due to the frigid cold temperatures and flu season, we didn’t venture out of the house much for the first few months. But then springtime rolled around, and we decided it was time to get outside and venture out on some walks to get a little sun and fresh air.
Knowing that babies are extra sensitive to the sun’s powerful UV rays, I wanted to make sure that our baby was wearing sunscreen to avoid developing a sunburn. Both myself and my husband have extra sensitive skin, so I wanted to find a product for my baby designed for sensitive skin to prevent any potential allergic reactions.
Once again, I conducted my research and came across this Thinkbaby Sunscreen and after reading the ingredients list and lots of positive reviews, decided to order some. What I love about it, is that it’s free of biologically harmful chemicals, parabens and phthalates. I try to look for all of this criteria in my products to prevent any unnecessary skin flareups, which both my hubby and I have a history of.
After applying the sunscreen, my baby didn’t develop any allergic reaction and I loved the gentle scent and the fact that it wasn’t overly greasy like some sunscreens tend to be. This sunscreen is definitely one of my top product picks to date!
Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner {Spitting Up}
Another issue that we’ve been dealing with ever since day one, is constant spitting up.
I’m not even joking.
Our baby loves to fill his belly with milk, but it’s not uncommon for the milk to make a reappearance shortly after in the form of….yup, you guessed it.
Spit up.
All over him. All over me. All over the floor, the couch, the chair….EVERYWHERE.
One product that has come in handy for wiping up the spit up is the Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner with the grapefruit scent. We use this stuff ALL. THE. TIME.
We keep a bottle of it upstairs and downstairs along with a cloth or roll of paper towel so that we can quickly clean up the mess once our baby is done spewing out all of his milk….which never really comes to an end, which is why we’ve used quite a bit of this product.
What I love the most about this product is its natural ingredients (say buh-bye to all of those harmful chemicals!) and its light refreshing scent. It resembles freshly squeezed grapefruit and I find the light citrusy scent helps to freshen up the house and get rid of the not-so-pleasant smell of sour milk.
Yummy.
So there you have it! The products listed above have definitely been my top picks for dealing with all the common baby issues you can think of including bum rash, cradle cap, sunburn, stains and spit up. We always try to choose products that are as safe and natural as possible, and these definitely fit the bill.
