Why We Love This Halloween Donuts Recipe
- Festive: These baked chocolate donuts are a fun way to get into the Halloween spirit! Decorated with spooky faces, they’re a great way to get the kids excited about baking and are the perfect festive treat for a Halloween party or movie night.
- Healthier option: Unlike traditional fried yeast donuts, these baked cake donuts are made with more wholesome ingredients and are loaded with fibre, healthy fats, and antioxidants for a sweet treat that will leave you feeling full and satisfied. They’re also made without butter or yeast and the base of the donuts are refined sugar-free!
- Allergy-friendly: Naturally gluten-free and easy to make dairy-free, too, these cute Halloween donuts are a great option for those with specific dietary requirements.
Ingredient Notes
- Flour: A combination of oat flour and almond flour are used to replace the white flour that’s typically used, while maintaining that soft and fluffy texture.
- Coconut sugar: I usually like to keep coconut sugar on hand to sweeten baked goods because it has a lower glycemic index than traditional sugar. However, brown sugar can be used in its place if that’s all you have on hand.
- Cocoa powder: Used to create a rich chocolatey flavour while also providing antioxidants. For the healthiest donuts, use unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder.
- Baking powder: Use fresh baking powder to help the donuts rise and become fluffy.
- Salt: Enhances the rest of the ingredients, bringing out an even more decadent chocolate taste.
- Milk: Use whatever milk you have on hand! Regular milk is great, or a plant-based option like almond or cashew milk work just as well to keep this recipe dairy-free.
- Eggs: Used to bind the ingredients together and help these baked donuts hold their shape.
- Coconut oil: This is used to replace regular butter. If you don’t mind a stronger coconut flavour, use an unrefined oil. Or, keep the taste neutral with refined coconut oil.
- Honey: Helps sweeten the donuts without the need for refined sugar. If needed, swap it out for maple syrup instead.
- Vanilla extract: If you can, opt for pure vanilla extract instead of imitation vanilla for a bolder flavour.
- Chocolate chips: Dark chocolate chips are melted and combined with coconut oil for a healthy glaze.
- Decorations: Halloween sprinkles, candy eyeballs, and pretzels are used to create cute faces and spooky creatures out of the baked donuts.
How to Make Baked Donuts without Yeast – Step by Step Instructions
Step 1 – Prepare the Donut Batter
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray or use a silicone one.
- In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients including the oat flour, almond flour, coconut sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- In a second smaller bowl, combine the wet ingredients including the eggs, milk, honey, oil, and vanilla extract.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, and mix until the ingredients are well combined and smooth. Do not over-mix!
Step 2 – Bake the Donuts
- Pour the batter into the donut pan, filling each mold close to the top.
- Place donut pan in preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Step 3 – Dip Donuts in Chocolate Glaze
- Remove the donuts from the oven, and allow them to cool for 5 minutes in the pan. Then, carefully remove them, and set them on a cooling rack to finish cooling.
- While the donuts are cooling, prepare the glaze. To do so, melt the chocolate chips in a small bowl in 30-second increments until melted. Stir in the melted coconut oil until the mixture is smooth.
- Once cooled, dip the surface of each donut into the melted chocolate glaze, and place on a parchment paper lined rack or baking sheet to set.
Step 4 – Decorate!
- Add the decorations to the top of each donut while the chocolate is still wet. Allow chocolate and decorations to set in the fridge or at room temperature.

Tips for the Best Baked Donuts
- To save time, you can purchase pre-made oat flour in nearly any grocery store. Or, for a super budget-friendly option, make your own by blending whole oats in a high-speed blender until a fine, flour-like consistency is formed.
- Be careful to mix the wet ingredients into the dry gently, and stop once they are just combined. Continuing to mix will result in tough, dense, and dry donuts…nobody wants that!
- This recipe will make 6-7 donuts, depending on the pan used. I used the Wilton donut pan and got 7 donuts. However, if you have leftover batter, add it to a greased muffin tin, and bake up a fluffy muffin instead! Or, just wait until the first batch is done baking, and add the remaining batter to the same pan.
- For easy decorating, I typically keep these chocolate baked Halloween donuts on the larger size. However, if you prefer smaller donuts, fill the mold only about 3/4 of the way full. Just be sure to keep an eye on them in the oven as smaller donuts will likely require less baking time.
- Given the size of these donuts, it is likely that the batter may expand and cover some of the hole. For a more distinct donut hole, insert the handle of a wooden spoon into the hole, and twist it in a circle to remove any excess batter.
- To speed up the cooling process, place the donuts in the fridge for 20-30 minutes to solidify the glaze.
Recipe FAQs
Leftover homemade donuts will last anywhere from 2 days at room temperature or a week in the fridge.
Sure! You will likely need to reduce the baking time, though. So, be sure to keep an eye on them in the oven.
Yes! Non-stick donut pans are great for creating professional-looking donuts with ease, but not everyone has one. If you don’t have one on hand, you can divide the batter into a muffin pan instead and insert a roll of foil in the centre to create a donut hole.
How to Store Donuts
Room Temperature: Once baked and cooled, transfer the Halloween donuts to an airtight container, and store them in a cool, dry place at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Refrigerator: For a slightly longer-lasting option, store your donuts covered in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
Freezer: Place the donuts on a baking sheet, and place them in the freezer until they’ve hardened. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe container, and store them for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to eat, let them thaw in the fridge overnight.
How to Reheat
For a warm, chocolatey taste, reheat leftovers in the microwave for a few seconds or until they’re warmed through. Or, wrap them loosely in aluminum foil, and warm them in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 5 minutes or until your desired temperature is reached.
