Ingredient Notes

- Avocados: Avocados are super nutritious and loaded with potassium, healthy fats and fibre. For this pudding, use overripe avocados that are not overly firm for best results.
- Cacao powder: The cacao powder makes this pudding super rich and provides a dose of antioxidants. If possible, use raw cacao powder rather than Dutch processed cocoa or baking cocoa powder since it lends a richer and bolder flavour and offers a higher amount of antioxidants.
- Unsweetened almond milk: You can also use regular milk if you don’t required a plant-based option, or use any other plant-based milk alternative like soy, rice or coconut.
- Maple syrup: I used 100% pure maple syrup as a sweetener. You can use sub in honey if not vegan.
- Vanilla extract: For sweetness and flavour. Use pure rather than imitation if possible.
How to Make Chocolate Avocado Pudding – Step-by-Step
Place all of the ingredients into a food processor or a high-powered blender and blend on high until the ingredients have broken down.

Give the pudding a good stir and continue blending until you get a very smooth and creamy pudding texture. Taste and adjust according to personal preference.

Serve immediately with your favourite toppings or store in the fridge for later.

Tips for the Best Chocolate Avocado Pudding
- Use avocados that are very ripe as they will have a creamier consistency and will break down more easily to form a smooth pudding. If the avocados aren’t ripe enough, they may be too firm and harder break down, which may result in chunks throughout the pudding.
- Make sure that you blend the pudding really well to avoid any chunks of avocado being present. I also recommend stirring the pudding a few times throughout the blending process to make sure all of the ingredients are fully incorporated.
- For smoother pudding: If you find that the avocados in the pudding are having trouble breaking down, add a bit more almond milk one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached.
- Adapt sweetness according to taste: You can add more maple syrup if you’d like your pudding to be sweeter or more cacao powder if you want it to be richer in flavour. Taste before serving and adjust if needed.
- If you feel like you can still taste the avocado, add some extra cacao powder or an additional ½ teaspoon or so of vanilla extract to help disguise the taste of the avocado.

Storage Guidelines
Refrigerator: This dark avocado chocolate pudding is a great make ahead dessert. Store it covered in the fridge or in an airtight container. It will keep well for up to four days.
Freezer: Transfer your pudding into a freezer-safe container, bag, or wrap the cups or mason jars you plan to serve it in. It will keep well for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight before serving. You could even freeze it in popsicle molds to make healthy pudding pops!
Recipe FAQs
Recipes made from avocado don’t usually last that long since the avocado browns so quickly. The beauty of this pudding is that it’s already brown from the cacao powder, so it lasts longer since the avocado blends right in. You can typically keep this avocado pudding in the fridge for up to four days or freeze it instead.
Chocolate pudding made with avocados can be a great healthier treat since it’s loaded with healthy monounsaturated fats, fibre and antioxidants. Avocados are also rich in vitamin E and potassium for an extra dose of nutrients. That being said, like any treat, it’s best to consume this pudding in moderation as the calories can add up quickly.
Serving Suggestions
This healthy chocolate avocado pudding tastes great on its own but even better when topped with any of the following:
- Dollop of coconut whipped cream or regular whipped cream
- Shaved or roughly chopped dark chocolate
- Chocolate chips
- Fresh raspberries or strawberries
- Cherries
- Banana slices
- Coconut flakes
- Chopped nuts
- Drizzle of peanut butter
- Some of these cookie dough bliss balls crumbled over top
- Granola (try this healthy chocolate granola)
- Oreo crumbs (try these dirt pudding cups!)
Recipe Variations
- To make sugar-free or keto-friendly: Use sugar-free maple syrup.
- Switch up the milk: Use your preferred milk alternative like coconut milk (or coconut cream), oat milk or soy milk. You can also use regular milk if you don’t require a vegan option.
- Use a different sweetener: Use honey or agave syrup in place of maple syrup. You could even try pitted Medjool dates as a more natural sweetener. Just be sure to blend them really well.
- Add extra protein: Add in a bit of protein powder or blend in some silken tofu. You may need to increase the milk slightly if you incorporate these add-ins so that it doesn’t thicken up too much.
- Try a different flavour: Sub in some brewed coffee for the almond milk to make mocha-flavoured pudding or add in a tablespoon or so of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter flavour. You could even add in some orange juice instead of some of the almond milk and top with a bit of orange zest for a chocolatey orange twist.

Delish……tried peppermint with caramel bits and vanilla chocolate with dried cranberries. Both excellent. Will double the recipe next time
Ohh YUM!! Love the festive twist! I am definitely going to try those combos sometime! Thanks so much for the inspiration :)
Avocados are all different sizes, and here in Florida, they can be huge. So when you say (4), is it possible to give a cup amount?
Sorry, I didn’t realize that there were super huge avocados! I weighed the avocados that I used and each one was about 200 grams, so for this recipe you would need about 800 grams of avocados. Hope that helps!
How long is this good for once you make it and put it in the fridge?
So sorry for the delay! It should be good in the fridge for up to 4 days. If you scroll through the post, I always try to leave storage instructions there for reference :)
would this work with Coconut milk? I’m allergic to tree nuts
I haven’t tried it with coconut milk, but I think it would still work well! Keep most posted on how it goes if you try it out! :)
